Protecting your child’s tooth enamel is one of the most important things we do at every preventive visit. Remineralizing varnish strengthens enamel, helps repair early areas of weakness, and reduces the risk of cavities. It is one of the simplest, most effective preventive treatments available in pediatric dentistry.
At Pediatric Dentistry, we offer both fluoride varnish and fluoride-free nanohydroxyapatite varnish. We believe families deserve options, not ultimatums.
Fluoride varnish has been used in pediatric dentistry for decades. It works by forming a stronger mineral layer on the tooth surface, making enamel more resistant to the acids that cause cavities. It is quick, painless, and well supported by research. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends fluoride varnish as part of routine preventive care for children at risk of cavities.
Nanohydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring mineral that makes up the majority of tooth enamel. When applied as a varnish, it bonds to the tooth surface and fills in microscopic areas of weakness, helping to remineralize and protect enamel without fluoride. It is biocompatible, non-toxic if ingested, and increasingly supported by clinical research.
Some families prefer a fluoride-free approach for their children, whether because of personal health preferences, concerns about fluoride ingestion in young children, or simply because they want an alternative. We respect that, and we are glad to offer an option that lets those families still receive effective preventive care.
We do not push one option over the other. During your child’s visit, we will talk with you about which remineralizing varnish makes the most sense based on your child’s age, cavity risk, and your family’s preferences. Both options are applied the same way: painted directly onto your child’s teeth, taking just a few minutes, with no discomfort.
Some families choose fluoride varnish. Some choose nanohydroxyapatite. Some alternate between the two. Whatever you decide, your child is receiving real, effective protection for their teeth. That is what matters.
Parents often ask us what toothpaste they should use for their child. The same principle applies at home: both fluoride and hydroxyapatite toothpaste can be part of a good oral hygiene routine. For very young children who tend to swallow toothpaste, hydroxyapatite toothpaste is a practical choice since it is safe if ingested. For children at higher risk for cavities, fluoride toothpaste may offer stronger protection. We are happy to make a recommendation at your child’s next visit based on their specific needs.
The most important thing is that your child brushes twice a day with a toothpaste they will actually use.
We are one of the few pediatric dental practices in the Quad Cities that offers both fluoride and fluoride-free remineralizing options. We do this because we believe good care starts with listening to families and respecting their choices. Whether you are looking for a pediatric dentist who uses fluoride, a fluoride-free dentist for your child, or simply a practice that gives you honest information and lets you decide, you are welcome here.
The first visit is all about getting to know your child and helping them feel comfortable. We’ll do a gentle exam, talk with you about your child’s dental health, and answer any questions you have. No pressure. Just a chance to start building trust.
We go slow, we stay calm, and we celebrate every brave moment. Our team is trained to help children feel safe and in control. We use simple language, show them what we’re going to do, and never rush. Most kids surprise themselves with how well they do.
Most children benefit from visits every six months. This lets keep their teeth clean and reinforce good habits at home. It also gives us the ability to catch small concerns early. Some kids may need to come more often depending on their needs.
We accept most PPO dental insurance plans as an out-of-network specialty provider. Our team will help you understand your benefits and file claims on your behalf. We’re happy to answer questions about cost before any visit.
Call us right away. We do our very best to make room for emergencies and will get your child seen as quickly as possible, often the same day or the next day. If it’s after hours, our voicemail will guide you on what to do next.
Yes. We have experience and training in caring for children with a wide range of developmental, sensory, and medical needs. Every child deserves excellent dental care, and we’ll work with you to make visits as comfortable as possible.
Keep it simple and positive. Let them know we're friendly, that we'll count their teeth and make them sparkle, and that it's going to be a fantastic experience where they get stickers and a prize. Avoid words like "pain" and "hurt." Definitely avoid the word "shot" - we don't have a liquor license, and we're firmly against underage drinking. Again, please keep it simple and positive. We'll handle the rest.
