Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist for Your Child

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist for Your Child

The difference between a pediatric dentist and a general or family dentist

When it comes to your child’s dental care, you have options. You can take them to your family dentist, or you can see a pediatric dentist. Both are licensed professionals. So what makes a pediatric dentist different, and why does it matter?

Specialized Training

A pediatric dentist completes two to three additional years of residency training beyond dental school, focused entirely on the dental care of infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special health care needs. That training covers child development, behavior management, sedation, hospital dentistry, and the treatment of dental conditions specific to growing mouths.

Think of it the same way you think about your child’s doctor. A pediatrician is a specialist in children’s medicine. A pediatric dentist is a specialist in children’s dental care.

An Office Built for Kids

A pediatric dental office is designed from the ground up with children in mind. The environment, the equipment, the language the team uses, and the pace of every visit are all tailored to help kids feel safe and comfortable. That matters, especially for young children, anxious children, and children with special needs.

A Different Approach

Children are not small adults. They think differently, they respond differently, and they need a different approach. A pediatric dentist understands child behavior and development in a way that shapes every interaction, from how we explain a procedure to how we handle a child who is scared or uncooperative.

We do not force, rush, or pressure. We build trust, celebrate effort, and help children develop a positive relationship with dental care that lasts into adulthood.

Board Certification

A board-certified pediatric dentist has gone a step further, completing a rigorous examination process through the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Board certification demonstrates a commitment to the highest standard of care in the specialty.

Dr. Al is a board-certified pediatric dentist serving families from Moline, East Moline, Rock Island, Davenport, Bettendorf, and communities throughout the Quad Cities.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child first see a dentist?
What makes a pediatric dentist different from a general dentist?
What happens at the first visit?

The first visit is all about getting to know your child and helping them feel comfortable. We’ll do a gentle exam, talk with you about your child’s dental health, and answer any questions you have. No pressure. Just a chance to start building trust.

How do you help kids who are nervous or scared?

We go slow, we stay calm, and we celebrate every brave moment. Our team is trained to help children feel safe and in control. We use simple language, show them what we’re going to do, and never rush. Most kids surprise themselves with how well they do.

How often should my child come in?

Most children benefit from visits every six months. This lets keep their teeth clean and reinforce good habits at home. It also gives us the ability to catch small concerns early. Some kids may need to come more often depending on their needs.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept most PPO dental insurance plans as an out-of-network specialty provider. Our team will help you understand your benefits and file claims on your behalf. We’re happy to answer questions about cost before any visit.

What if my child has a dental emergency?

Call us right away. We do our very best to make room for emergencies and will get your child seen as quickly as possible, often the same day or the next day. If it’s after hours, our voicemail will guide you on what to do next.

Do you see children with special healthcare needs?

Yes. We have experience and training in caring for children with a wide range of developmental, sensory, and medical needs. Every child deserves excellent dental care, and we’ll work with you to make visits as comfortable as possible.

How can I prepare my child for their visit?

Keep it simple and positive. Let them know we're friendly, that we'll count their teeth and make them sparkle, and that it's going to be a fantastic experience where they get stickers and a prize. Avoid words like "pain" and "hurt." Definitely avoid the word "shot" - we don't have a liquor license, and we're firmly against underage drinking. Again, please keep it simple and positive. We'll handle the rest.
