What we do when kids are nervous, anxious, or scared of the dentist
Dental anxiety in children is common, and it is nothing to feel bad about. Some kids are nervous because they have never been to the dentist before. Some have had a difficult experience somewhere else. Some are simply cautious about new situations. All of that is normal.
What matters is how we respond.
At Pediatric Dentistry, we practice what we call Brave and Bold dentistry. That means we go at your child’s pace, we stay calm, and we never force a child into something they are not ready for.
We talk to children, not about them. We explain what we are going to do in simple, honest language before we do it. We celebrate effort and bravery, even when things are hard. And we use a gentle, patient approach that gives kids time to build trust with our team.
For some children, a calm environment and a patient team are enough. For others, we offer additional options:
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) helps a child relax while staying awake and aware. It wears off quickly and is very safe.
IV sedation allows a child to sleep comfortably through their treatment when anxiety or treatment needs make it the best option.
We will never recommend sedation unless we believe it is the right choice for your child. And we will always talk through the options with you so you can make the decision that feels right for your family.
If your child has an upcoming dental visit and you want to help them feel ready, keep it simple. Tell them the dentist is a friendly place where we count teeth and make them sparkle. Avoid words like “hurt,” “shot,” or “pain.” And try to stay relaxed yourself, because kids pick up on your energy.
Some visits do not go perfectly, and that is okay. If a child cries, refuses to open, or needs to stop partway through, we do not see that as failure. We see it as information. We meet the child where they are, do what we can, and make a plan for next time.
A child who leaves feeling safe after a hard visit will come back. A child who leaves feeling forced will not. We would rather build trust slowly than lose it all at once.
Families across the Quad Cities bring their nervous and anxious children to us because they know we will be patient. We are glad they do.
The first visit is all about getting to know your child and helping them feel comfortable. We’ll do a gentle exam, talk with you about your child’s dental health, and answer any questions you have. No pressure. Just a chance to start building trust.
We go slow, we stay calm, and we celebrate every brave moment. Our team is trained to help children feel safe and in control. We use simple language, show them what we’re going to do, and never rush. Most kids surprise themselves with how well they do.
Most children benefit from visits every six months. This lets keep their teeth clean and reinforce good habits at home. It also gives us the ability to catch small concerns early. Some kids may need to come more often depending on their needs.
We accept most PPO dental insurance plans as an out-of-network specialty provider. Our team will help you understand your benefits and file claims on your behalf. We’re happy to answer questions about cost before any visit.
Call us right away. We do our very best to make room for emergencies and will get your child seen as quickly as possible, often the same day or the next day. If it’s after hours, our voicemail will guide you on what to do next.
Yes. We have experience and training in caring for children with a wide range of developmental, sensory, and medical needs. Every child deserves excellent dental care, and we’ll work with you to make visits as comfortable as possible.
Keep it simple and positive. Let them know we're friendly, that we'll count their teeth and make them sparkle, and that it's going to be a fantastic experience where they get stickers and a prize. Avoid words like "pain" and "hurt." Definitely avoid the word "shot" - we don't have a liquor license, and we're firmly against underage drinking. Again, please keep it simple and positive. We'll handle the rest.
